Don't just see the future, change it

Seeing the future with BI is an interesting article in InfoWorld on the gradual shift from backward-looking business intelligence to forward-looking predictive analytics. That said the article I think missed the trend towards operational systems that leverage analytic data. Although predictive analytics embedded in a dashboard helps a knowledge worker see the future, this insight is still only available to the knowledge worker.  If the information is to be used to CHANGE the future then that insight must somehow be applied to decisions the company is going to make. EDM or decision-centric business intelligence or operational business intelligence is about automating the process of applying this insight to transactional decisions so that the whole extended enterprise knows what to do about the predictions coming out of the data.
